About the Book

About the Widow's Book of Moons After years of living in remote places in Alaska it is no wonder that the author knows the way snow falls or glaciers groan. Life alone at 60 below zero places a burden of sharp reality on a person, and the lessons learned can not be erased no matter what environment envelopes you. There is danger in frivolous inattention to the moment. This wisdom combines with Buddhist mindfulness practice to examine closely the layered processes of grief. The Widow's Book of Moons is a collection of poems written after the sudden death of her husband. The poems are moments in the experience of loss and the understanding of impermanence in all aspects of life. Grief, humor and curiosity sometimes combine in observation of wild nature and the mind.
About the Author: BIO Denise Lassaw grew up in the New York art world. Living and traveling in many places on the planet, including Mongolia, India, Nepal, Europe, and in California during the 60s, she spent a winter in a teepee in New Mexico, taught papier maché mask making and puppets to Inuit children in the arctic, worked as a laborer on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, did construction work in Anchorage, taught ceramics, sold welded belt buckles and necklaces at craft fairs; and lived alone in the wilds of Alaska, making everything she needed by hand. She has published her poetry and essays on life and art in various places, given a slide talk at the National Portrait Gallery, written a script for a film about Tibet, and had many sweet adventures, . There is no way to write a short bio without telling stories that become longer and longer. It is easier to say what she did not do: get a fancy college degree; have a full time job for years and years, remain in one place, have a mortgage; or wear high heels more than once in her life. It is enough to say she has created her own life and despite being completely human, is happy.
