Der großte Teil des Lebens ist gelebt, die Tage sind gekommen, in denen die Lebensernte eingefahren wird. Vieles, was er sich vorgenommen hatte, hat er erreicht, manches, was er erreichen wollte, ist auf der Strecke geblieben. Eine Begebenheit hat in all dem Drunter und Druber, das seinen Lebensweg so holprig machte, zeitlebens im Unterbewussten rumort. Der Vater, Kufermeister in einer sudbadischen Kleinstadt, kehrt bereits im ersten Kriegsjahr schwer verwundet, kriegsuntauglich und desillusioniert zuruck nach Hause. Er macht aus seiner Abneigung gegen den NS-Staat keinen Hehl. In der Werkstatt, am Wirtshaustisch sagt er, was er uber Adolf Hitler und »seine Bande« denkt: »Die mussen wieder weg.« Der Ortsgruppenleiter verwarnt ihn, aber er lasst sich nicht mundtot machen und bringt mit seiner Renitenz sich und seine Familie in existenzbedrohende Schwierigkeiten und sich schließlich ins Gefangnis. Nach Kriegsende drangen auch jene wieder zur Geltung, die das Leben des Vaters beschadigt haben, der Lehrer zum Beispiel. Damit wird er nicht fertig. Er halt sich nun mehr und mehr im Wirtshaus auf, kommt ins Saufen, zerstort die Familie. Der Sohn, der Ich-Erzahler des Romans, ist ein introvertiertes, leicht versponnenes, uberangstliches Kind, das unter der Unbesonnenheit und gelegentlichen Brutalitat des Vaters leidet und viele Stunden im Luftschutzkeller verbringt, auch wenn es keinen Fliegeralarm gibt. Die Großmutter trostet ihn, wenn seine Angst vor dem Vater ubermachtig wird. Oben in der Mansarde hort er, wenn der Vater betrunken nach Hause kommt und in der Kuche mit Geschirr um sich wirft. Felix Schmidt gehort zu den einflussreichsten Journalisten des Landes . Als Ressortleiter Kultur des Spiegel, als Chefredakteur der Welt am Sonntag und des Stern sowie als Programmdirektor des Sudwestfunks pragte er das publizistische Leben seit den 1970er-Jahren in Deutschland mit. Er war unter anderem Produzent der ersten deutschen politischen Talksendung Talk im Turm und hat die ZDF-Sendung Das Philosophische Quartett ins Leben gerufen. Fur sein Buch uber die Geschichte des franzosischen Chansons ist er mit dem franzosischen Kulturorden »Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres« ausgezeichnet worden. Der Autor steht fur Lesungen zur Verfugung.
