Die triuwe ist ein sehr facettenreicher mittelalterlicher Begriff und kann nicht ausschließlich mit "Treue" übersetzt werden. Wilhalm verspürt einerseits einen großen Drang sein Leben zurückzulassen und der triuwe zu Christus zu folgen, andererseits kann er seine triuwe zu Bêne nicht einfach vernachlässigen. Die vorliegende Arbeit möchte dieses Verhältnis genauer untersuchen und die folgende Forschungsfrage beantworten: Besteht ein Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Wilhalms triuwe zu Bêne und zu seinem Glauben? Zunächst werden die verschiedenen Facetten der triuwe beschreiben. Danach wird analysiert, ob Wilhalm die triuwe zu Bêne und zu Christus miteinander vereinbaren kann. Hierfür wird jeweils untersucht, wie Wilhalms triuwe zu Bêne und zu Christus dargestellt wird. Kann in beiden Fällen eine vollkommene triuwe festgestellt werden? Möchte Wilhalm beide triuwen im gleichen Maß befolgen? Wilhalm von Wenden ist ein von Ulrich von Etzenbach verfasstes höfisches Epos. Die genaue Entstehungszeit lässt sich auf die Jahre zwischen 1287 und 1297 datieren. Es zählt zu den legendenhaften Stoffen, allerdings ist deren Handlung zusätzlich mit Legendenmotiven durchsetzt. Wilhalm von Wenden liegt die Eustachiuslegende zugrunde: Das Protagonistenpaar Wilhalm und Bêne regieren das heidnische Wenden, bis einige christliche Pilger in Wilhalm den Wunsch erwecken Christus zu folgen. Zunächst möchte er allein losziehen, doch seine Frau überredet ihn sie mitzunehmen. Nachdem sie auf dem Weg Zwillinge gebärt, verkauft er diese, lässt Bêne bei einer Wirtin zurück und fährt allein weiter.
