Jahrhundert europäische Bedeutung, und noch heute ist der Name Wilhelm Tell auf der ganzen Welt ein Symbol für Freiheit und Unabhängigkeit. Jean-François Bergier (1931-2009) hatte sich auf die Suche nach den historischen Wurzeln dieser legendären Figur gemacht. Entdeckt hatte er dabei das kleine Volk unbeugsamer und fleissiger Bauern, das sich im 13. Jahrhundert durch die Eröffnung des Gotthardpasses Machtbestrebungen von ausserhalb ausgesetzt sah, gegen die es sich erfolgreich auflehnte. "Ist Wilhelm Tell vielleicht eine Art Sammelname?" fragt Bergier - ein Kollektivbegriff, der ein Volk bezeichnet, das seine Autonomie verteidigt, so dass die Biographie Tells zu der seines Volkes führen muss? Die Sicht auf Europa vom Ufer des Vierwaldstätter Sees aus, die Bergiers Buch vermittelt, bietet ein faszinierendes Bild der Umwälzungen in der Welt des ausgehenden Mittelalters.
About the Author: Jean-François Bergier (1931-2009) gilt als einer der wichtigsten Schweizer Historiker. Er lehrte als Professor für Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte an der ETH in Zürich. Einer breiten Öffentlichkeit wurde Bergier bekannt als Präsident der Unabhängigen Expertenkommission Schweiz-Zweiter Weltkrieg (1997-2001) und durch den \"Bergier-Bericht\" über die Beziehung der Schweiz zum nationalsozialistischen Deutschland. Josef Winiger, geboren 1943 in der Schweiz, studierte in Paris, Aix-en-Provence und München, wo er in Philosophie promovierte. Er übersetzt seit 1980 aus dem Französischen Belletristik und Sachbuch u.a. von Jean-François Bergier, Georges Simenon, André Comte-Sponville, Sylvie Germain, André Glucksmann, Julien Green, Jean Rouaud, Laurent Mauvignier, Joëlle Kuntz. Er ist bekannt als Leiter zahlreicher Übersetzer-Werkstattgespräche.
