Wir geben nicht auf! - in unerbittlicher Strenge gegen sich und seine Umgebung vertritt Mühsam seine Überzeugungen, die immer von den Grundlagen seiner historisch-gesellschaftlichen Analyse geprägt sind. Wenn sich Mühsam mit Mut und innerer Autonomie in Wort und Schrift für andere einsetzt, denkt er zugleich daran, eine Mehrheit jenseits parteilicher Beschränkungen aufzubauen, die den aufkommenden Faschismus stoppen kann. Seine Mitstreiter sind zu wenige ... Erich Mühsam wird 1934 im KZ Oranienburg nach langer Haft qualvoll umgebracht. Im Nachhinein gibt ihm die Geschichte Recht; gerade deshalb wirkte er bedrohlich, gerade deshalb hasste man ihn. Günther Gerstenberg hat charakteristische Texte aus verschiedenen Lebensphasen ausgewählt, um dem ganzen Mühsam gerecht zu werden. Dabei favorisiert er Unbekanntes und berücksichtigt vor allem Texte mit einem Bezug zu München und zu Bayern. In der ausführlichen Einleitung wirft er Schlaglichter auf wichtige Stationen in Mühsams Leben. Zahlreiche zeitgenössische und zum Teil nur schwer zugängliche Dokumente - Verhörprotokolle, Briefe und Akten - ermöglichen ein umfassendes Verständnis und eine Würdigung der Position von Erich Mühsam.
About the Author: Erich Muhsam, geboren 1878 in Lu-beck, zieht 1908 von Berlin nach Munchen. Dort schreibt er fur Kabaretts und Zeitschriften wie Simplicissimus Jugend und Der wahre Jacob; 1911 bis 1914 gibt er die Wochenschrift Kain - Zeitschrift fur Menschlichkeit heraus. Der Kriegsgegner wird nach Ausbruch der Revolution Mitglied des Revolutionaren Arbeiterrats in Munchen und ist ein fuhrendes Mitglied in der Munchner Raterepublik. 1919 wird Muhsam zu 15 Jahren Festungshaft verurteilt, 1924 wird er amnestiert; von 1926 bis 1931 gibt er die Zeitschrift Fanal heraus; nach dem Reichstagsbrand wird Muhsam verhaftet, interniert, unmenschlich gequalt und in der Nacht zum 10. Juli 1934 im KZ Oranienburg ermordet. Neben kampferischer Publizistik schrieb Muhsam autobiographische Texte und Theaterstucke; vor allem aber politische Zeitgedichte und Lieder.
