Im Jahr 2004 gab es bereits mehr als 285 Mio. Hosts (ISC Internet Domain Survey, 2004). Exponentielles Wachstum wird die Zahl der Internetuser im Jahr 2005 auf mehr als 1 Mrd. treiben (Computer Industry Almanac, 2004). Die Multimedialität des Internet ist einmalig. Es ist flexibel, offen, informal, interaktiv und besitzt die Fähigkeit, Besucher in Kunden zu transformieren (Palanisamy, 2003). Der wohl größte Vorteil ist die Interaktivität. Der Konsument bestimmt das gezeigte selbständig. Der Navigationspfad ist nicht festgelegt, sondern ergibt sich aus den Eingaben des Nutzers. Beim Fernsehen kann der Zuschauer lediglich das Programm wechseln, aber sich nicht aktiv beteiligen. Die Technik des Internet ermöglicht den Gebrauch von Text, Bild, Ton und Video zugleich, was gegenüber den Printmedien einen immensen Vorteil verschafft. Die Aufmerksamkeit des Konsumenten kann somit auf verschiedenste Weise beeinflusst werden. Zusätzlich ist die Verfügbarkeit einer Website und ihres Inhalts nicht orts- oder zeitgebunden, wie etwa Fernsehen oder Radio. Ein weiterer großer Vorteil ist die Möglichkeit der Individualisierung. Es entsteht eine One-to-One-Beziehung (Hofacker, Murphy, 1998), welche es möglich macht, jedem Konsumenten, abhängig Im Jahr 2000 erzielte Onlinewerbung bereits einen Umsatz von 8,2 Mrd. $ (Interactive Advertising Bureau).
