Inhaltsangabe: Problemstellung: Früher wurde Onassis (Reeder und Ölmulti) als der reichste Mann der Welt bezeichnet, heute ist es Bill Gates (Microsoft) als Wissensmanager im IT-Bereich (Ackermann, 2003). Dieses Beispiel zeigt, dass sich in den Industriestaaten bereits ein fundamentaler Wandel vollzogen hat: der Übergang zu einer Informations- und Wissensgesellschaft. In dieser beruht ein immer größerer Anteil der Wertschöpfung auf immateriellen Werten und nicht mehr auf den klassischen Produktionsfaktoren. Die digitale Revolution, die bis in die individuellen Lebensbereiche des Einzelnen hineinreicht, wird Schlüsselfaktor und Verursacher des Wandels. Wissensmanagement erweist sich somit als Herausforderung für alle Unternehmen, die in der Wissensgesellschaft überleben und ihre Wettbewerbsposition ausbauen wollen. Es berührt die Ebene des strategischen Managements dort, wo es um die langfristige Sicherung von Wettbewerbsvorteilen durch Entwicklung organisationaler Fähigkeiten geht. Auf gesamtwirtschaftlicher Ebene ist in den modernen Industrienationen der Anteil wissensintensiver Industrien an der gesamten Wertschöpfung kontinuierlich im Steigen begriffen. Dieser Trend wirkt immer deutlicher auf den wirtschaftlichen Erfolg eines Unternehmens, was eine wachsende Anzahl dazu bewegt, die Ressource Wissen als fundamentale Einflussgröße anzuerkennen. So verrichten ca. 60 Prozent aller Mitarbeiter bereits Wissensarbeit und 83 Prozent aller Unternehmen halten gezielten Wissensaufbau für unverzichtbar (Hermann, 2002). Bei dieser zentralen Bedeutung von Wissen als Produktionsfaktor der Zukunft, der Rohstoffe und Energie, aber zunehmend auch Arbeit und Kapital ersetzt, wird das Wissen über Wissen und damit über den dynamischen Prozess des Wissensmanagements immer wichtiger.
