About the Book

Marie was a severely handicapped five-year old and Michelle was an ordinary teenager when they first met. Michelle Daly soon became the youngest single woman in Britain to obtain legal guardianship of somebody else's child. Now, over forty years later, Michelle tells their story-a challenge to all who read it and a celebration of great achievement-in an unsentimental, honest and thought-provoking voice. "It reads like an adventure story. As has so often happened in the past, formal education is again proved to have little to do with writing talent. Michelle Daly has a gripping story to tell, and she tells it simply. To say With a Little Help From My Friends is touching is an understatement. It was far from easy, but she makes the whole thing a story of excitement and triumph over the various odds that presented themselves with regularity." Maeve Binchy "Congratulations, With a Little Help From my Friends is excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it." Anne Robinson "With a Little Help From My Friends demonstrates what can be achieved if you have faith in the person, determination in your soul and love in your heart. This book is a must read for all learning disability nurses, and a source of inspiration for warrior mums and dads out there. Thank you for sharing your story with us. Helen Laverty, Health Lecturer, Nottingham University
About the Author: Michelle Daly was kicked out of school at age fifteen with a reference stating, "Michelle thinks life is one big joke." She went on to work with children in residential care and in 1972, at nineteen, became the youngest single woman in Britain to obtain legal guardianship of a child; Marie, a seven year-old with mental and physical disabilities. In 1990, they moved to Ireland a country she refers to as her second home, where she home-schooled her two children, Patrick and Anna. An advocate for children's rights and people with special needs, she lives with Marie in Liverpool. Michelle has also written a book of fiction, I Love Charlotte Brontë, which is available in paperback and kindle editions.
