Erst wird zunächst der historische Kontext geschildert. Dann folgt eine analytische Beschreibung der Trümmerliteratur. Da Wolfgang Borchert ein sehr bekannter Vertreter dieser Literaturrichtung war, wird seine Biographie kurz vorgestellt und auch, in welchem Maß sein Schicksal seine Werke beeinflusste. Danach wird die Kurzgeschichte "Nachts schlafen die Ratten doch" von Borchert genauer analysiert. Dabei stehen die Merkmale der Trümmerliteratur und das Prinzip von Borchert im Vordergrund. "Der Krieg hat einen langen Arm. Noch lange, nachdem er vorbei ist, holt er sich seine Opfer." Dieses Zitat beschreibt den Krieg aus Sicht der Kriegsopfer und Hinterbliebenen zutreffend. Normalerweise wird das Thema Krieg in der Literatur für Propaganda verwendet. Es wird heldenhaft und positiv beschrieben, um die jungen Männer für den Kriegsdienst zu begeistern. Sie möchten heldenhafte Taten vollbringen und ihr Land vertreten und dabei ehrenhaft sein. Dabei werden jedoch die eigentlichen, realistisch eintretenden Folgen außer Acht gelassen. Wenn der Krieg dann vorbei ist, macht sich die Zerstörung und das Elend erst richtig bemerkbar. Es geht dabei nicht nur um materielle Opfer, sondern auch um die psychischen Opfer. Die psychischen Folgen können sich noch lange, nachdem der Krieg vorbei ist, bemerkbar machen, wobei viele psychische Schäden nicht mehr zu beseitigen sind. Viele junge Soldaten merken erst viel zu spät, dass der Krieg viele Opfer von ihnen fordert. Das Leben mitten im Krieg, das ständige Leiden, die Angst vor dem Tod, die Zerstörung, die Krankheiten, die verlorenen "Kameraden", der Aufenthalt in Lazaretten usw. zerstören den Menschen. Vor allem junge Soldaten können sich nach einem Leben
