About the Book

On Woodworking: Notes From a Lifetime at the Bench picks up where With Saw, Plane and Chisel left off. This beautifully illustrated collection of short essays, personal experiences, notes, quips, and quotes examines the sublime craft of woodworking, the people and personalities we meet during our craft journey, and the nature of the most important element of woodworking, wood itself. Insightful, sometimes brash, and deeply funny, On Woodworking will not show you what or how to build but it may just help you understand why we build.
About the Author: Zachary Dillinger owns and operates The Eaton County Joinery, a period reproduction furniture shop. In addition to his work as a period reproduction furniture maker, he is a USPAP-compliant appraiser of fine and decorative art, specializing in antique furniture and tools, for Wipiak Consulting and Appraisals. He also works as a freelance writer and appraiser for RM Sotheby's. He has written articles for Popular Woodworking Magazine, Fine Woodworking Magazine, American Period Furniture (the journal of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers), Early American Life Magazine, and the newly-created Mortise & Tenon Magazine. His first book, With Saw, Plane and Chisel: Making Historic American Furniture with Hand Tools, was published in December 2016. His work has been featured at furniture shows and museums around the country. He has demonstrated period techniques for the Society of American Period Furniture Makers, The Furniture Project, L.L. Johnson Lumber Company, and at numerous historical events. His work has been adjudged to be "Museum Quality" by Early American Life Magazine and has been juried into their exclusive Directory of Traditional American Crafts for the last three years. Zachary is a member of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers, the Midwest Tool Collectors Association, and is a Student Affiliate of the Appraisers Association of America. He holds a BA in Political Science from Michigan State University and also studied fine and decorative art appraisal and connoisseurship at New York University. He lives in Michigan with his wife April and their two year old daughter Abigail.
