About the Book

Writing On The Edge is a trip through various worlds I came to know in depth from the inside: pro football, grand prix racing, French wine, bullfighting, The New York Times, opera, treasure diving, NY police headquarters, Hollywood, and, of course, France. These worlds are portrayed as I knew them, together with some of their major players with whom I became involved. So it's a memoir certainly, but it's also a primer for freelance writers: how to make a living at a tough trade-how I did it anyway. I had many successes and became what counts as a rich writer (meaning not very rich.) But there were many downs too- rejections, humiliations, and even lawsuits-but fewer of these as I learned to protect myself. A freelance writer is unemployed each time he finishes a contract. Where will next assignment come from? There is a certain amount of fear in any freelance life, and in this book too. My career brought big fees and fancy places, but not always. Not nearly.
About the Author: New York Times best selling author Robert Daley has written 30 books, eighteen of them novels, many of which were filmed, and twelve non fiction books including Prince of the City, Portraits of France, and the newly published Writing on the Edge - The Ups and Downs of a Freelance Career. His first job was with the New York Football Giants, for whom he worked six seasons, also writing stories and articles on the side. This was followed by six years as a New York Times correspondent in Europe, living in France but covering stories in eighteen countries. He served as a New York deputy police commissioner in 1971-72, one of the most tumultuous periods in the city's history, an experience that resulted later in a number of books, fiction and non-fiction both. His books have been translated into fourteen languages. Many were book club selections both at home and abroad. Six have been filmed. His articles and stories have appeared in Esquire, The Readers Digest, Vogue, Playboy, New York, The New York Times Magazine, Sports Illustrated, Life, The Saturday Evening Post and most other major American magazines. He and his French born wife have three daughters and five grand children. They have homes in suburban New York and in Nice, France. See his website at robertdaleyauthor.com
