§ 1. Zweck und technische Bedeutung der Wärmeaustauscher Wärmeaustauscher dienen dem Zweck, die in einem strömenden Stoff enthal- tene Wärme oder Kälte auf einen anderen strömenden Stoff tieferer oder höherer Ausgangstemperatur zu übertragen. Die in Wärmeaustausch tretenden Stoffe sind meist gasförmig oder flüssig. Grundsätzlich kann in einem Wärmeaustauscher auch zwischen mehr als zwei Stoffen Wärme übertragen werden 1. Zahlreiche technische Anwendungen der Wärmeaustauscher beruhen auf fol- gender Überlegung. Verbrennungsvorgänge und viele andere chemische Reak- tionen finden bei Temperaturen statt, die weit über der Umgebungstemperatur liegen. Hierbei verlassen die gasförmigen oder flüssigen Erzeugnisse den Ort des Vorganges häufig mit hoher Temperatur und enthalten daher noch große Wärme- mengen, die bei wirtschaftlicher Betriebsweise nicht unausgenützt verloren gehen dürfen. Umgekehrt ist es vielfach erwünscht, die noch unverarbeiteten Aus- gangsstoffe anzuwärmen, bevor sie dem Ort des Vorgangs zugeführt werden. Die in den Erzeugnissen enthaltene Wärme wird daher am besten ausgenützt, indem man sie in Wärmeaustauschern auf die Ausgangsstoffe überträgt. Bei chemischen Umsetzungen, z. B. bei der Verbrennung in technischen Öfen, ist ein solcher Wärme- aust. ausch häufig sogar unerläßlich, weil die Reaktions- oder Verbrennungswärme allein zur Aufrechterhaltung der erforderlichen hohen Temperaturen nicht aus- reichen würde. Stets aber erhöht eine derartige Ausnutzung der in den Endstoffen enthaltenen Wärme die Wirtschaftlichkeit des Verfahrens. Eines der ältesten und bekanntesten Verfahren dieser Art ist die Vorwärmung der Luft und des Heiz- gases in den Regeneratoren des Siemens-Martin-Ofens durch die Wärme, die in den Verbrennungsabgasen enthalten ist.
