Desde aquel día, Zacarías se quedó totalmente prendado del toreo.No es tarea fácil glosar una figura cuyo aura atrajo a autores como Unamuno, que decía de él "que toreaba en vascuence sin traducir", o Wenceslao Fernández Flores que aseguraba que "nuestra devoción, en estas cosas de toros, está con Lecumberri", ni sencillo desmadejar el ovillo de la personalidad de quien, lo mismo brindaba sus toros en un perfecto euskera, que rompía para el bando nacional el cerco marítimo andaluz durante la Guerra Civil.Si alguien aúna capacidad literaria y conocimiento del medio es Antonio Fernández Casado, que ya desde la atalaya de un merecido paréntesis profesional puede volver a lucir el terno de "Antonio de Monterrey" para la ardua tarea de, "ir capeando temporales y matando toros", trasunto de la vida de Zacarías Lecumberri.Es en el interior de este crisol de tremendismo, arrojo, apuesta y tesón personal, no exento de contradicciones vitales, es en el que, citando de lejos, ha embebido el relato en su muleta, sin darse la ventaja de tirar por la futilidad del anecdotario, ahondando en aquel pozo, ya descubierto en su inolvidable "Toreros de hierro", donde las andanzas de mi coterráneo ya aparecían barnizadas por el brillo de la admiración.Y es que, para quien anheló en su juventud enfundarse el traje de luces, resulta natural aprehender la pasión desbordada que derrochó Zacarías, ya fuera haciendo tapias en sus tiempos de maletilla ya fuera al timón del Pedro de Valdivia o en los alberos en los que hizo el paseíllo en pos de un romántico sueño que le cosió a cornadas. En mi caso, el encantamiento proviene de algo más intimo, una conexión geográfica y vital que, salvando los años, me transporta a las jornadas de pesca en un escenario común y compartido, las marismas de Busturia en el mismo corazón del Urdaibai. Aunque probablemente, lo que Antonio y a mi nos atrajo, en última instancia, fue su empeño en poner el pecho para citar al toro y a la vida. Ese empeño que tan bien verbalizaba nuestro protagonista, cuando afirmaba: "Yo no acostumbro a cambiar de cara, ni de palabra".Desconozco si a lo largo de esta sinfonía inacabada que es mi vida, lograré cumplir mi anhelo. Lo que ya llevo por delante es que, la historia a la se había hecho acreedor Zacarías Lecumberri, ya está contada.
About the Author: Antonio Fernández Casado ejerció en los años ochenta y noventa de articulista y corresponsal taurino ocasional de diversos medios de comunicación de ámbito local y nacional.
