Dabei ist es wichtig, sich zu Beginn mit dem Werk auseinanderzusetzen, um anschließend den detaillierten Missbrauchsfall von Sarah Ottens betrachten zu können. Des Weiteren müssen die Begriffe der Performance, der Vergewaltigung und der Zeugenschaft definiert werden, um anschließend dessen Relevanz für die folgenden Überlegungen zu verdeutlichen. Nachdem diese grundlegenden Gedanken ausgeführt wurden, kann die Zeugenschaft in dem Werk näher erläutert werden. Abschließend werden im Fazit die wichtigsten Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit zusammengefasst, die zur Beantwortung der oben genannten Forschungsfrage führen. Ana Mendieta (1948-1985) war eine kubanische Künstlerin, die schon als Kind aufgrund der politischen Einstellung ihres Vaters gezwungen war, in die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika auszuwandern. Zuerst wurde sie nach Miami gebracht, später lebte sie in Iowa und fing dort an zu studieren. Von Beginn an waren ihre Werke durch Themen wie Vergänglichkeit, Abwesenheit, Gewalt und Zugehörigkeit geprägt. Hierbei verstand sie sich selbst als transkulturelle und transmedial arbeitende Künstlerin und ihr eigener Körper stand stets im Fokus. "Her work crossed many borders including artistic and time-based disciplines; geographical and political boundaries; and the investigations of history, gender and culture" zeigt, dass Mendieta sich in keine eindeutige Kategorie einordnen lässt. Konkrete Kategorien wie Feminismus, Body-Art oder Land-Art beschreiben Mendietas Werke nicht optimal. Ihr gelingt es, sich ihren eigenen künstlerischen Raum zu erarbeiten: Im Dazwischen. Mendietas Werke sprechen zwar leise, aber leidenschaftlich zu uns.
