Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2019 im Fachbereich BWL - Investition und Finanzierung, Note: 3,0, FOM Essen, Hochschule für Oekonomie & Management gemeinnützige GmbH, Hochschulleitung Essen früher Fachhochschule, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Das 1978 vom amerikanischen PanAm-Piloten Kim Lundgren in Oregon (USA) gegründete Unternehmen "Air Berlin Inc". galt zum Anfang der Jahrtausendwende, nach dem Mitbewerber "Deutsche Lufthansa AG", als die erfolgreichste Fluggesellschaft Deutschlands. Ein Jahr nach Eintragung startet der erste Flug mit einer Boeing 707 vom Flughafen Berlin-Tegel nach Palma de Mallorca. 1991 kauft der deutsche Unternehmer Joachim Hunold 82,5 Prozent der Geschäftsanteile und gründet so die Air Berlin GmbH & Co. Luftverkehrs KG. Das neue Unternehmen läuft mit zwei Flugzeugen, 150 Mitarbeiten und bis zu 15 Flügen pro Tag an. Die Fluggesellschaft wächst rasant; kauft 2004 rund 25 Prozent der österreichischen Airline Niki, geht nach Änderung der Unternehmensform von einer GmbH & Co. KG in eine Limited & Co. KG mit britischem Recht (PLC) 2006 an die Börse, übernimmt die Fluggesellschaft dba, kauft 2007 für interkantonale Verbindungen die Fluggesellschaft LTU und bildet 2011 eine strategische Partnerschaft mit der arabischen Fluggesellschaft Etihad Airways. Die Flotte beinhaltet zu diesem Zeitpunkt 170 Flugzeuge, welche zusammen rund 800 Flüge pro Tag absolvieren. Nur wenige Jahre nach diesem Höhenflug, fängt das Unternehmen an seine Flotte zu reduzieren und streicht infolge erste Strecken. Anhaltende Verluste zwingen Air Berlin letztendlich am 15. August 2017, das Insolvenzverfahren einzuleiten. Doch wie kam es zu dem Negativ-Trend und zu welchem Zeitpunkt hätte Air Berlin die drohende Insolvenz erkennen müssen?
