Schon in der Steinzeit setzte der Mensch seine Fähigkeiten ein, um Gegenstände herzustellen, die ihm das tägliche Leben und Überleben erleichterten. Archäologische Ausgrabungen beweisen, dass der Mensch schon ab der Steinzeit die Rohstoffe der Natur nutzte, um z.B. Jagdgegenstände oder agrarische Geräte anzufertigen. Das oberste Ziel des Menschen war im Wesentlichen die Nahrungsbeschaffung, weshalb die gewerbliche Produktion relativ unorganisiert blieb. Dies änderte sich bis weit in das Frühmittelalter hinein kaum. Im Mittelalter jedoch, vollzog sich ein elementarer Wandel der bis dahin bestehenden gesellschaftlichen Strukturen. Und zwar der Wechsel von der autonomen, agrar- und viehwirtschaftlich orientierten Gesellschaft auf dem Lande, hin zur Handwerks-, Handel- und Gewerbetreibenden Gesellschaft in den großen Städten. "Handwerk hat goldenen Boden", so sagt der Volksmund. Der "goldene Boden", auf dem das Handwerk sich vollends zu entfalten begann, war unweigerlich der der mittelalterlichen Stadt. Handwerker und Händler organisierten sich in Zünften und Gilden. Mit den Jahren gewannen diese immer mehr an Macht und dominierten fast das gesamte Leben in den mittelalterlichen Städten. Die deutschen Zünfte des Mittelalters wurden als konstituierendes Element einer hoch entwickelten Städtekultur angesehen, welche zusammen mit dem deutschen Kaisertum die Größe Deutschlands ausmachte. Diese Hausarbeit befasst sich zunächst mit den allgemeinen Strukturen des Zunftwesens im Mittelalter.
