About the Book

Die Zeit bis 1939 und die ersten 45 Lebensjahre Hopps waren äußerst bewegt und prägend: Vom Arbeiterkind zum wandernden Malergesellen vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg, als Soldat überlebend, Dekorationsmaler-Meister sowie Fortbildung zum Kunstmaler zeigen enormen Bildungswillen. Als Künstler auch nach der Heirat 1923 mit seiner Frau ein Bohéme-Leben führend kommt er 1927/8 zur Sesshaftigkeit in Fuhlsbüttel. Ehrenamtlich wirkt er in Schüler-Bibelkreisen, in deren Arbeit er seit Jünglingstagen über den CVJM hineingewachsen war. Die Leitung der 'Werkstätte für kirchliche Kunst im Rauhen Hause', Ausstellungen und erste literarische Beiträge schaffen mehr Selbstbewusstsein. Mit Teilnahme am Wettbewerb um das Ehrenmal an der Kleinen Alster mit dem Bibelkreis-Freund Rudolf Jäger, der als Dipl.Ing. die Ideen Hopps auch fachlich gut ergänzt, entsteht ab 1930 die Absicht zur Architektur-Zusammenarbeit. 1933 bringt der 5-köpfige Familie Trennung vom 'Rauhen Haus'; sie will in einem 'evangelischen Werkhaus' Auskommen finden und zieht auf den Darß. Dort gelingt ein erster Kirchenbau, der für ihn und den Kompagnon Initialwirkung hat und mit zur Gründung des Architekturbüros 1935 führt.
About the Author: Dr. Uwe Gleßmer (Jahrgang 1951) ist Privatdozent für Altes Testament. Er wurde 1982 nach seinem Vikariat in der Gemeinde Maria-Magdalenen von Bischof Wölber zum Pastor ordiniert, arbeitete bis 2013 mit kurzzeitigen Unterbrechungen an der Universität Hamburg. Seit seinem Ruhestand ist er ehrenamtlich am Geschichtsprojekt der Lutherkirchen-Gemeinde in Hamburg-Wellingsbüttel engagiert sowie an dem Dokumentationsprojekt zum Architekturbüro Hopp und Jäger (www.huj-projekt.de). - Auf dem Hintergrund der Erschließung des umfangreichen Fotomaterials des Hamburgischen Architekturarchivs widmet er sich in besonderer Weise den von H&J vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg im Norden Hamburgs gestalteten Kirchbauten sowie den damit verbundenen historischen Zusammenhängen.
