Die vorliegende Arbeit entstand aus Interesse an theoretisch-methodischen Fra- gen der gesamtgesellschaftlichen Entwicklungstheorien. Urspriinglich sollten drei mit der Entwicklungsproblematik der Dritten Welt befa1l, te Konzepte (Modernisie- rungstheorie, marxistische Theorie und Dependenztheorie) unter dem Aspekt ihrer Beziehung zur Geschichte miteinander verglichen werden. Dieses Problem wurde bald aus drei Grunden verworfen: erstens beinhaltet jede dieser drei Theorien vielfliltige Aspekte und unterschiedliche Richtungen, deren vollstandige Berticksichtigung im Rahmen einer Dissertation nicht realisierbar er- schien; zum zweiten sind die Grenzen zwischen Marxismus und Dependenzforschung nicht so eindeutig bestimmbar wie zwischen diesen und Modernisierungstheorien; und schlie lich setzte sich wahrend der Arbeit immer mehr das Interesse durch her- auszufinden, ob es mOglich sei, eine dieser drei Theorien per se kritisch zu behan- deln, ohne dabei auf einem Vergleich mit anderen Theorien zu bestehen. Da1l, ftir dieses Vorhaben die Modernisierungstheorien ausgesucht wurden, war nicht zufallig: die revolutionaren Veranderungen im Iran, die im Februar 1979 zu einem Zusammenbruch der tiber zwei lahrzehnte forcierten ModernisierungspJane ftihrten, bestimmten m geblich die hier getroffene Entscheidung. Das Interesse des Verfassers flir den inneren logischen Aufbau der Modernisierungs- theorien und der daraus resultierende Versuch, diese Theorien auf ihre innere Konsi- stenz zu prtifen, hat zur Folge, d konkurrierende Theorien und alternative Ansatze kaum diskutiert werden. Hier geht der Autor von dem Grundsatz aus, da1l, die imma- nente Kritik der modernisierungstheoretischen Methodik eine wichtige Voraussetzung flir die Entwicklung von alternativen Strategien darstellt; Strategien, die die Moder- nisierungsideologie in ihrer Grundstruktur nicht einfach iibenvinden, sondern kon- struktiv ersetzen sollen.
