Dabei haben Bichsels Personen eine Eigenschaft, fur die man sie sofort mag: Sie strahlen Warme aus, weil sie alle von ihrem Autor geliebt werden - seien es Fabrikanten, Fußballer oder einfach nur arme Tropfe, Betrunkene, ganz Nuchterne, Dummkopfe oder Schlauberger, Kinder, altliche Witwen oder Eskimos in New York. Mit Zur Stadt Paris ist Peter Bichsel ein Geschichtenbuch gelungen, das uns Lesern - mal in kurzen Zugen, dann wieder mit langerem Atem - davon erzahlt, daß es gerade das Kleine, das Minimale, das unscheinbar vor Augen liegende ist, das uns, beobachtet man es genau oder laßt es einfach sprechen, alles uber uns verrat. „Der Lebenslangliche, befragt, wie er das aushalte oder mache all diese Jahre im Gefangnis, antwortet: Weißt du, ich sage mir immer, diese Zeit, die ich hier verbringe, mußte ich draußen auch verbringen."
