Assessor Harald Harst verliert seine Braut Marga durch einen Mord. Obwohl es ihm gelingt, den Täter zu fassen, führt der Tod der Verlobten ihn dahin, seinen Beruf als Jurist bei der Berliner Staatsanwaltschaft aufzugeben und sich von nun als als Privatermittler der Aufklärung von Verbrechen zu widmen. Sein vertrauter Freund Max Schraut hilft ihm dabei. Der vorliegende Band enthält die ersten 5 Fälle der Detektiv-Serie Harald Harst, die zwischen 1920 und 1934 im Verlag moderner Lektüre GmbH, Berlin, erschien. (Zwei Taschentücher, Das Geheimnis des Czentowo-Sees, Der Mord im Sonnenschein, Die Jagd auf einen Namen, Liu Sings Geheimnis). Autor war der am 8. August 1878 geborene Walther Kabel, einer der meistgelesenen deutschen Unterhaltungsschriftsteller der 1920er Jahre, der seine Geschichten und Romane auch unter den Pseudonymen Max Schraut, Olaf Karl Abelsen, W. Belka und weiteren Namen publizierte. Kabels erster langer Kriminalroman Das Haus am Mühlengraben war ein so großer Erfolg, dass der Verleger Lehmann ihm anbot, Hauptverfasser seiner neuen Romanheftreihe Der Detektiv zu werden. 1921 wurde der Titel der Serie, die Kabel unter dem Namen Max Schraut schrieb, in Harald Harst - Aus meinem Leben geändert. Vom 3. Heft der Serie an trat Assistent Schraut - ähnlich wie Dr. Watson in Conan Doyles Sherlock Holmes-Reihe - als Ich-Erzähler der Fälle und Abenteuer des Berliner Ermittlergespanns auf. Nachdem im Jahr 1933 die Nationalsozialisten an die Macht gekommen waren, wurde Kabel trotz seiner Mitgliedschaft in der NSDAP 1934 als Schmutz-und-Schund-Autor mit einem Schreibverbot belegt. Ein Jahr nach dem Verbot, das den Autor schwer traf, verstarb Kabel am 6. Mai 1935 unter nie ganz geklärten Umständen in Kleinmachnow bei Berlin.
