Die Nähe der nationalsozialistischen Propaganda zu Methoden der wirtschaftlichen Werbung ist heute unumstritten. Der Erfolg des Nationalsozialismus beruhte nicht zuletzt auf einer geschickten Vermarktungsstrategie. Bisher jedoch wurde diese enge Verflechtung von Propaganda und Werbung im «Dritten Reich» kaum untersucht. Die vorliegende Studie analysiert die besondere Verbindung von Kommerz und Ideologie im nationalsozialistischen Deutschland erstmals ausführlicher. Sie beginnt mit den Beziehungen zwischen Propaganda und Werbewelt vom Wilhelminischen Kaiserreich bis zur Weimarer Republik. Die Ausdehnung des nationalsozialistischen Propagandamonopols auf die Wirtschaftswerbung und die Unterwerfung des Werbewesens unter das Propagandaministerium im «Dritten Reich» werden eingehend untersucht. Anschauliche Beispiele zeigen, wie die Werbung sich allmählich zu einem Propaganda- und Steuerungsinstrument des Regimes wandelte und dass dies keineswegs immer unter Zwang geschah. Die Analyse der Auswirkungen des nationalsozialistischen «Gesetzes zum Schutz der nationalen Symbole» schließlich demonstriert, was im Falle eines Konfliktes von Propaganda- und Wirtschaftsinteressen unternommen wurde. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit widmet diese Darstellung der sprachlichen Entwicklung des Bedeutungsverhältnisses von «Reklame», «Propaganda» und «Werbung» sowie dem Umgang mit dem Hakenkreuz als wichtigem NS-Symbol und dem «Führerkult» um Adolf Hitler.
About the Author: Waltraud Sennebogen, geboren 1975, arbeitet seit Ende 2006 als Referentin bei der Haniel Stiftung in Duisburg. Zuvor war sie wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Lehrstuhl für Neuere und Neueste Geschichte an der Universität Regensburg.
