Kann ein kompletter Zyklus voller Begegnungen und Dialoge ein einziges Selbstgespräch darstellen? Um diese Fragen zu klären, wird nun für den Zyklus "Schwarzmaut" im Allgemeinen hinterfragt, ob es sich um ein Selbstgespräch handeln könnte, um dann diese These im Einzelnen anhand des "Du" als Instanz des Selbstgespräches an ausgewählten Gedichten zu begründen. "Alle Dichtung ist Gespräch." Was Martin Buber in seinem Werk "Daniel - Gespräche von der Verwirklichung" schreibt, nahm sich auch Paul Celan zu Herzen. Doch ist in Celans Gedichtzyklus "Schwarzmaut" nicht alle Dichtung vielmehr Selbst-Gespräch? In der Forschung wird häufig davon ausgegangen, dass mit dem "Du" in den Gedichten Paul Celans seine Frau Gisèle Celan-Lestrange gemeint ist, andere sind der Meinung, Celans Mutter, Freunde des Dichters oder Gott seien dadurch angesprochen. Doch der 1968 entstandene und 1970 im Gedichtband "Lichtzwang" veröffentlichte Zyklus "Schwarzmaut" ist zum Großteil in der psychiatrischen Anstalt Saint-Anne in Paris entstanden, in welche sich Celan im Februar 1967 selbst einweisen ließ. In der Nervenheilanstalt war es ihm nur erlaubt, über Briefe Kontakt zu seiner Frau und seinem Sohn Eric zu halten. Durch diesen Briefwechsel wurde der Entstehungsprozess der Schwarzmaut-Gedichte gut dokumentiert und häufig geben die Briefe auch Hinweise auf verschiedene Auslegungsmöglichkeiten. Außerdem verfasste Celan in den Briefen die Interlinearübersetzungen in das Französische für seine Frau, die des Deutschen nicht mächtig war. Aus diesen Übersetzungen, die meist ein wenig deutlicher formuliert waren als das deutsche Äquivalent, gehen einige Interpretationsansätze hervor; diese geben wohl die vom Dichter selbst angedachte Richtung genauer vor.
