Zypern, mit knapp 10 000 qkm die drittgroßte Mittelmeer-Insel, ist der sudostliche "Vorposten"der Europaischen Union. Doch die Bewohner des Landes blicken, bedingt durch dessen Nachbarschaft auch zu Asien und Afrika, auf eine gut 9000jahrige Erfahrung mit fremden Besuchern und Kulturen zuruck: Achaer, Phonizier, Agypter, Assyrer, Perser, Hellenen, Byzantiner, Araber, christliche Kreuzfahrer, das frankische Geschlecht der Lusignans, die Genuesen und Venezianer, die Turken und die Briten - sie alle haben ihre Spuren hinterlassen. Doch die Begegnungen waren nicht immer friedlich: Die Inselherren waren allzu oft ungebetene und herrschsuchtige "Gaste", die aus der Bruckenlage der Insel schonungslos ihren Profit gezogen haben. Das hat dazu gefuhrt, dass die Jahre der Unabhangigkeit Zyperns nur einen winzigen Teil der langen Landesgeschichte ausmachen. Viele der Kultureinflusse haben sich tief im zyprischen Wesen verankert und treten oft spektakular zutage: Ausgrabungen stein- und bronzezeitlicher Siedlungen, altkyprischer Stadtkonigtumer, romischer Villen und Theater legen ebenso Zeugnis einer bewegten Geschichte ab wie byzantinische Freskenkirchlein, gotische Kathedralen, venezianische Festungen und Kultstatten des Islam. Die landestypischen Charakterzuge haben auch das Jahr 1974 uberdauert, als turkische Invasionstruppen im Norden etwa ein Drittel des Landes besetzten und die Teilung der Insel erzwangen. Es gehort zu den bitteren Ironien der Geschichte, dass dieser Zustand zum einen volkerrechtliches Unrecht geschaffen und zementiert, zum anderen aber im freien Suden der Republik einen erstaunlichen wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung nach sich gezogen hat. Bei der Beurteilung dessen, was meist als "Zypernproblem" bezeichnet wird, halt sich das Buch an die internationalen Rechtsauffassungen und die UN-Resolutionen. Gleichwohl werden die traditionellen und modernen Lebensweisen beider Volksgruppen beschrieben, aber auch ihre Sorgen, die in ihrer von der Natur verwohnten Heimat ihre ganz eigene Geschichte haben.
