La nuit était tout à fait venue. A la pointe du Raz, qui domine l'Océan de ses falaises, et tout le long de la baie des Trépassés, des formes vagues erraient çà et là, se collaient contre les roches, se blottissaient dans les moindres anfractuosités des murs de granit. Beaucoup cherchaient un abri dans les grottes qui bordent le rivage, car le froid était rigoureux. Hommes et femmes arrivaient d'un peu partout: de Ker Is, dont on apercevait les feux à une portée de flèche; des chaumières isolées où l'on descendait courbé en deux, comme dans des caves; et là-bas, de plus loin, de l'intérieur des terres. Tous marchaient sans bruit; tous se rassemblaient silencieux comme devant une tombe: et c'était bien un immense ossuaire, la mer sauvage où pour une nuit leurs morts devaient revenir, pressés comme un vol de mouettes. On était en novembre. C'était la nuit des âmes. Depuis le matin la pluie tombait, fine et triste; maintenant, d'instant en instant, des éclairs jetaient des reflets froids sur les grèves, sur les êtres anxieux qui se penchaient pour mieux voir; et ces lueurs aveuglantes rendaient ensuite les ténèbres plus sinistres et comme vivantes... La mer montait depuis des heures, lente d'abord, avec des allures sournoises; puis déchaînée, furieuse, grondant d'un bruit de tonnerre dans les grandes roches. La mer, la nuit, a une sorte d'épouvante spéciale. On dirait que cette sombre masse mouvante porte en elle toute l'horreur de l'invisible, d'un invisible conscient et hostile. Presque toujours, pour rendre la fête des âmes plus tragique, la tempête sur ces côtes se mêlait à la nuit. Les blanches crêtes d'écume dessinaient, aux éblouissements des éclairs, la hauteur fantastique des lames qui rejaillissaient à plus de quatre-vingts pieds, et, dans leur remous, creusaient ces gouffres où les morts roulaient et hurlaient, éperdus. Pourquoi les âmes qui hantaient ces rives traînaient-elles toujours l'orage à leur suite ? Que trouvaient-elles donc dans la survivance à laquelle tout Celte croyait d'une foi si ferme ? Pourquoi revenaient-elles ainsi, avec des lamentations et avec des sanglots ?...
