En Afrique du Sud, le plan national pour l'enseignement supérieur (NPHE, 2001) a entraîné de profonds changements dans le paysage de l'enseignement supérieur. Les fusions de plusieurs établissements d'enseignement supérieur figurent parmi les principaux changements. En 2005, l'Université de technologie Walter Sisulu (WSU) est née de la fusion des anciennes Border Technikon, Eastern Cape Technikon et de l'Université du Transkei. L'université accueille des étudiants des régions de Border et Kei, dans la province du Cap-Oriental, ce qui l'amène à communiquer avec un grand nombre de parties prenantes. Une communication efficace ainsi que le développement et le maintien de relations avec les principales parties prenantes deviennent donc essentiels. Cette étude a pour but d'examiner l'efficacité perçue des stratégies de communication entre l'Université Walter Sisulu et les étudiants. Une approche méthodologique mixte a permis de constater que, bien que les personnes interrogées estiment que la communication est satisfaisante, des inquiétudes ont été exprimées quant à l'efficacité des stratégies de communication utilisées. L'étude recommande la communication électronique comme stratégie clé pour faciliter la communication avec les étudiants.
