Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2020 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Komparatistik, Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft, Note: 1, Universität Wien, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diese Arbeit widmet sich einem modernen Roman aus den 80er Jahren, in dem Gewalt und Tod in den facettenreichsten Formen geschildert werden, Gewalt ein Ausmaß erreicht, die ein normaler Mensch nicht in seinen schlimmsten Alpträumen erlebt und gleichzeitig möchte ich eine Antwort auf die Frage suchen, warum jemand, der Autor Bret Easton Ellis, Derartiges schreibt, was seine möglichen Hintergedanken waren, was die Gewalt im Roman "Unter Null" uns vermitteln möchte, ob sie bewusst eingesetzt wurde, um eine abschreckende Wirkung zu erzielen, ob sie Formen der Ästhetik widerspiegelt, wie in Filmen von Quentin Tarantino, mit dem er auch schon zusammengearbeitet hat, oder ob er eigentlich nur tiefverwurzelte Perversionen der Menschheit auf diese Art repräsentiert und die Leserschaft Anteil daran haben lässt. Der berühmte Literaturkritiker Marcel Reich-Ranicki meinte einmal in einem Interview die zwei essentiellsten Themen die Literatur von Trivialität unterscheiden, seien Liebe und Tod. Das mag sehr naheliegend sein, denn schon Sigmund Freud meinte, die zwei Haupttriebe des Menschen seien die Libido und der Thanatos, folglich liegt Reich-Ranicki sicher richtig mit seiner These, weil Literatur, vor allem die großen Weltklassiker, wie Tolstois "Anna Karenina", Dostojewskis "Brüder Karamasov" und Familiensagas, wie die "Buddenbrooks" von Thomas Mann, bewusst immer wieder die Themen der Liebe und der Gewalt, die mit dem Tod Hand in Hand geht, in den schönsten und beeindruckendsten Varianten verpackt, beinhalten. Neben dem einzigartigen Stil und der Sprachgewandtheit jener Autoren, der Schilderung zeitgenössischer Probleme und Thematiken, lässt sich wohl unwidersprochen sagen, dass sie zurecht bis heute gelesen und hoch gelobt werden und Marcel Reich-Ranicki somit recht behält, was echte Literatur ausmacht.
