About the Book

Hartmut Heyck The two novellas by Wilhelm Jensen (1837-1911), "Der rote Schirm" ("The Red Umbrella") and "Im gotischen Hause" ("In the Gothic House") were originally published in 1892 by Felber under the title Uebermaechte (Superior Powers). They have apparently never been published in English. - These novellas play a certain role in the history of psychoanalysis, because Sigmund Freud refers to them in a letter to Jensen on December 16, 1907 concerning the latter's novella Gradiva, which Freud had analysed at length: . . . . a knowledgeable friend has drawn my attention to two other novellas of yours, which you have combined under one title as "Ueber-maechte". Of these the first - Der rote Schirm - shows remarkably many traits which also belong to the Gradiva; the other - Im gotischen Hause - appears to be related to the Gradiva via mediation of the first. The full text of Freud's letter and Jensen's reply are found in the Appendix. Hartmut Heyck. Uebermaechte is available in English from Amazon.com under W. Jensen, Superior Powers.
About the Author: Wilhelm Hermann JENSEN wurde am 15. Hartmut Heyck, Urenkel von Wilhelm Jensen Wilhelm H. JENSEN was born in 1837 at Heiligenhafen/Holstein (now Germany) and died in 1911 in Munich. Jensen was a prolific writer, poet and dramatist with more than 150 titles to his credit: Karin von Schweden had sales of 230,000+ copies. Jensen has now fallen out of favour with the public and is these days known mainly because Sigm. Freud analysed his novel Gradiva ("Delusion and Dream in Wilhelm Jensen's Gradiva"). If it were not for Gradiva, Jensen would now be largely forgotten. - As shown by a letter Freud wrote to Jensen in 1907, Freud was interested in Jensen's novellas "The Red Umbrella" and "In the Gothic House" in connection with Gradiva. For this reason the novellas are now made available in English. H. Heyck
