Best Renaissance Art Books

Renaissance is an art style that depicts human emotions and noble emotions of various kinds. It started in Europe in the 14th century and culminated in an increased awareness of nature, a revival of classical learning and an individualistic view. Renaissance is a French term which literally means rebirth. There was a revival of humanistic learning, individual thought and interest in painting, sculpture, art music and literature in the Middle Ages.

Art During the Renaissance

Painting

The art, during the Renaissance period in Europe (1400 to 1600) included some of the most recognizable and best loved paintings. Artists in the Renaissance were skilled in both paintings and sculpture. Renaissance artwork had realism, attention to detail and subtle meanings became features. Renaissance art included both spiritual and religious art. Wealthy painters were patrons of Renaissance art and Churches were the beneficiaries of this system in the first part of the Renaissance.

Renaissance Music

Secular Music was dependent in the Renaissance on the courts which could finance and support musicians. The Renaissance was also a time of great inventions in the form of new instruments such as the Lute and the Gemba.

 Books on the Renaissance

Here are a few recommended reads based on the art of Renaissance including music, painting, literature and sculpture.

  1. Michelangelo and the Pope’ s ceiling by Dr Ross King: In 1508, Pope Julius II had commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The thirty-three-year-old had very little experience of art, still for the next four years, he spent fifty hours on the ceiling of the chapel. The result was a fascinating experience and now Sistine Chapel is a tapestry of artist Michelangelo. He painted pictures of day life on scaffold ceilings in the Sistine Chapel.
  2. Boticelli: Past and Present: Artist Sandro Boticelligave us some of the most stunning Renaissance pieces. Paintings such as the Primavera and the Birth of Venus are as known today and at the time of their creation, as depicted by recent events around the world. Boticelli’s Past and Present engages with significant debates around Boticelli. The chapters of this book are organized in a chronological manner beginning with the discussion of the artist and his work moving on to progressive discovery of his work from the eighteenth to the twentieth century through the impact of his work on contemporary art and design.
  3. Painting the Dream: This book is organised in different periods and ages from the Middle Ages to the present, this book shows the idea of a dream and is depictions have shifted throughout History from the Biblical dream, to the light- hearted fantasy and the nightmare at times, these ideas have existed simultaneously, thus we have Rapheal’ composition of Jacob dreaming his ladder, Durer’s watercolour portrait of a deluge that he saw in his dreams. This rich vein of art from Gustave Moreau and Odilon demonstrates that Morpheus was a form of God and of dreams.
  4. Oxford ‘s Illustrated History of the Renaissance by Gordon Campbell:The Renaissance was one of the most celebrated periods in European History, but when did it begin and when did it end? What was included in the Renaissance? Views regarding the Renaissance have changed in recent years. The glories of Florence and the art of Michelangelo tells the history of this broader and longer Renaissance that looks at the high culture of the Renaissance, from seminal figures such as Dante and Giotto in thirteenth century Italy to the waning of Spain’s Golden age in the 1630’s, the closure of the English theatres in the year 1642.  It covers the entire Renaissance from Early to High Renaissance such as chapters on Humanism and classical tradition, war and state, religion, art and architecture, the performing arts, literature, crafts and technology are also included, Science and Medicine, travel and cultural exchange.
  5. Renaissance Art: A very Short Introduction by Geraldine A. Johnson:  Artists like Holbelin, Michelangelo and Durer, now these names are known to everyone and the monumental marble statue of David.  But who were these artists and why did they produce such monumental works? This short introduction mentions lesser-known artists, as well as forgotten aspects of Renaissance art.
